Background and Preface
A four-star event is the pinnacle of the sport of eventing. Eventing is often referred to as the triathlon of equestrian sport as it includes dressage, cross country and show jumping. It is typically referred to as three-day eventing. There are only six four-star events in the world and currently just one in the United States--Rolex, that takes place in April in Kentucky. Kentucky hosts a Triple Crown race--Kentucky Derby and Rolex. If the four-star event comes to Fair Hill, Maryland will also host a Triple Crown race--The Preakness--and a four-star event.READ MORE
A study commissioned by the Maryland Department of Agriculture and Maryland Horse Industry Board and released in 2015 recommended that Fair Hill be upgraded in order to host and attract national and international equestrian events such as three-day eventing, Grand Prix dressage and jumping, steeplechasing, endurance racing and driving. A four-star event at Fair Hill meets that objective-- an equestrian event that attracts participants and spectators from around the country and across the globe, providing Maryland with a significant economic impact over a short period of time.READ MORE
Fair Hill International is supported in its quest for the four-star event by the Fair Hill Foundation, Maryland Horse Industry Board, Maryland Sports Commission and Cecil County Government. Other supporters include Fair Hill Training Center, Maryland Department of Agriculture, Maryland Department of Commerce, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Cecil County Delegation to the Maryland General Assembly, Maryland Horse Council, National Steeplechase Association, Cecil County Fair, Fair Hill Races and Maryland Tourism Coalition. This broad support among various horse organizations can only lead to success.READ MORE
While Fair Hill hosts many equestrian events each year, improvements are needed and are scheduled to be under way to make the location even better for a four-star event. Those improvements included an irrigated turf racecourse and cross country course; rings and graded grass field in the infield; and a grandstand overlooking the turf track and rings.
Senator H. Wayne Norman (District 35; Harford and Cecil counties) sponsored a $100,000 bond bill during the 2017 legislative session to go toward the engineering designs for the anticipated improvements at Fair Hill. The bond bill has been matched by private donations to the Fair Hill Foundation, and work will begin later this year.READ MORE
